I am the senior minister of University Baptist Church, Charlottesville, VA, a congregation who serves the University of Virginia and surrounding community.
This is my personal blog. It is focused on theology and humanity’s encounter with God. My philosophy is God interacts with every aspect of our lives and those who look for it can see God at work (Matthew 13.16).
I write about theology and social, environmental, and economic justice, theology and literature, current events, and, on occasion, posts that don’t fit neatly into one of these categories. When I find a new resource, I like to share it here.
Why am I doing this? I want to help people grow in their faith journeys. I want to help people find meaning. And, I feel like God has called me to share my experience and education.
My goal is to post three to four times a week. To make sure you don’t miss my latest posts, please subscribe via RSS or email. At this point, I do not accept any advertising.
My Top Posts
Check out some of my top posts. Here are a few from several categories:
Before entering ministry, I worked in finance as a vice president at a brokerage firm in Chicago. Frustrated by the rat race and clear that I was not where God called me to be, I quit my job and started teaching scuba diving. My wife and I moved to Puerto Rico, but our vocational journey wasn’t finished. God was calling me to ministry.
We moved to Richmond where I attended seminary and I served as pastor of Hickory Baptist Church, Whitakers, NC. In 2007, we moved to Oxford, England where I began working on a D.Phil. in theology. In 2009, we moved to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay for me to begin serving as pastor of Kilmarnock Baptist Church, Kilmarnock, VA. After eight wonderful years, we felt God was calling us to new challenges. In 2017, University Baptist Church, Charlottesville, VA, called me to be the senior minister.
I have written two books. Preaching in Plenty and in Want (Valley Forge, PA: Judson Press, 2011) and The Work of the Church Treasurer (Valley Forge, PA: Judson Press, 2018). I am revising my doctoral dissertation to be published as a monograph.
My third book Words of the Fragrant Portals is about God and unity in a polarized America. It should be available in 2019.
I have been married to Melanie for over twenty years. We have two sons and live in Charlottesville, VA.
When I am not at University Baptist, I enjoy sailing, hiking, running, and reading. I am always up for a good game of ping pong.

In this space, I speak for myself and do not represent anyone else. My thoughts and opinions are not necessarily shared by everyone at University Baptist Church. I try to be as accurate as I can be and to present well-founded ideas. But, I am a fallible human being and prone to mistakes. When see them, let me know, and I will do my best to correct or explain as necessary. Thanks!
